The topic of discussion for the March Meetup will deviate from Darwin's Origin to a recent book by our contemporary, Niel Shubin: Your Inner FIsh.

Neil Shubin is the paleontologist who discovered Tiktaalik, and his book is delightful and invaluable.

Tiktaalik!

The usual details apply: we will be way in the back of the Malibu Diner. Usually we are in the very back by the rear, mirrored, wall.

As much as I love Sean Carroll's recent books, and a good number of excellent books that have come out in the last few years, this might be the best of all as an introduction. I can not praise this book too much.

And it is wonderful to get a word in Inuktitut into common worldwide discourse....

...

By the way, if any of you plan to buy a copy of Your Inner Fish for the Meetup, the following aside in an email from the book's talented illustrator, Kalliopi Monoyios, might figure in your thinking:

I don't know if your book group typically buys the books you read
through a particular seller, but if not, the lowly illustrator (!) gets
a cut from Amazon or Powell's if you buy through either of those links
on our website: http://tiktaalik.uchi... . I've exhausted the
generosity of my friends and family, now I have to reach out to the book
clubs to get (quasi-) royalties! ....

I think that I will be buying any other copies of the book from that site. It is a gratifying way to express my appreciation of good work well done in a noble cause. And I am sure that I will be picking up other copies....smile

Sorry, I can't make it. I have tickets to a show, that night. However, I saw Dr. Shubin at The Museum of Natural History in January. He lectured and showed slides of "Your Inner Fish." The lecture was interesting and informative.

It's nice to talk to people who have some idea of reality.
