Ad Hoc New York City Evolution Meetup Group

Meet other local evolutionists to discuss the latest news and theories--and current anti-evolution (anti-science, anti-education, etc.) trends. ["Evolutionist" is not a particularly satisfactory word, but it is a topic heading provided by Meetup, and it is an effective keyword. I would prefer something along the lines of "those interested in the subject of evolution as a fact and the multifariate ways it influences and is manifested in our universe--scientific ally, artistically, historically, philosophically, politically, societally."] Evolution is one of the most beautiful and profound insights into the universe our species has had, and it is to be joyously celebrated and observed: "Wonderful Life", as Steven Jay Gould said. The panoply of life is as wondrous a thing to observe for itself--rather than indulging in cosmic egocentrism--as the gas pillars in the Eagle Nebula. Creation seen *as it is* is love of the universe; Creation insisted on as an anthropomorphic self-reflection is fear and hate of the universe masked by projection. Caveat: Creationism and its subcategory of ID are no more science than is perpetual motion, the four humors, or flat-earth geocentrism.

On our agenda for the May Meetup is a discussion of Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin. (This was also the agenda for the last couple of Meetups--agendas being an ad hoc sort of thing anyway--but few of those who came had read the book; no matter....We had a good time anyway.)
